In Animal Biotechnology, technology is applied over biological agent of
human and animal origin to draw some industrial benefits.
Companies and research institutes of
animal biotechnology are working particularly on animal and human
healthcare related aspects. Stem cell technology, production of
artificial tissues (e.g. skin grafting) and organs, vaccine production
(via cell culture and attenuation; reproductive cloning (e.g. Dolly) and
recombinant DNA technology are some of the hot areas of this branch of
biotechnology. Other important aspects are animal breeding and
reproduction through in vitro fertilization.
Animals have always been integral part of human civilization and
improved animal traits have always been associated with growth of human
civilization. Indian government research institutes are very strong when
it comes to animal healthcare aspect of animal biotechnology. They have
been involved in vaccine production for poultry, cattle and other
domestic animals; animal breeding, disease diagnosis and cure via
various biotechnological means. Some private companies are also working
on the healthcare aspects of the animals particularly vaccine production
(via genetic engineering or cell culture), monoclonal antibody
production etc. Private sector is more concentrated on human healthcare
related problems.
Other important aspects of animal biotech is breeding or reproduction
through in vitro fertilization and cloning (e.g. Dolly). Animal Breeding
is done for the improvement of domestic, pet, poultry animals, and
fishes. There are 492.63 million livestock and 354.43 million poultry
population in India. Though qualitative and quantitative characters of
these animals can be improved by proper feeding, management and
protection from various diseases, still these measures are not found
sufficient for above improvement. Therefore animal breeding is always
preferred. About 80% of total livestock population in India is
non-descriptive, which need genetic improvement. Considering the huge
livestock population and its mega biodiversity, India requires thousands
of technically competent animal breeders. However, right now there are
only around 1000 animal breeders in India, who are working in Government
institutes and State Agriculture and Veterinary Universities.
Animal breeders can make a career in education and research in 8
veterinary and animal science universities, 31 agriculture universities,
25 State Livestock Development Boards and 19 animal science and 5
fisheries science institutes in ICAR., small animals houses of CSIR and
ICMR institutes, central government cattle, sheep and poultry breeding
farms, 45 military farms, National Dairy Development Board, State Dairy
Co-operative Federation, NABARD and commercialized banks.
Jobs sectors for applied animal sciences
and biotech students are:
-
Academic institutions: Students with
PG degree in animal genetics and breeding can apply for the post of
assistant professor in the faculty of veterinary, animal science,
agriculture and fisheries and for the post of scientist in various
animal, veterinary and fisheries institutions under ICAR.
Agriculture sciences and recruitment board (ASRB) conducts an all
India competitive exams-agricultural research services (ARS) for
various scientific posts.
-
Govt. Research Institutes: There are
several govt. run research institutes which are working on human and
animal healthcare aspects, which includes Hospitals like AIIMS
etc. Bright career opportunities are available at scientific
post in DBT, DST and DRDO institutions. One can also get job in
various laboratories of CSIR, ICAR and ICMR. For detail go to our
Animal biotech research
institutes
webpage.
-
Govt. sector: you can get a job in
central or state livestock and poultry breeding farms, national
livestock development board, national or state dairy development
board, military farms, NABARD, FAO, wild life institute and national
institute of animal welfare (ministry of environment and forestry),
CSIR/ICMR institutes in which small animal house facilities and
medical genetics division are available. Here students with PG
degree in animal genetics & breeding can get job as chief executive
officer, scientist, farm manager (livestock breeding farms), and
officer in-charge, bull mother farm. There are several govt.
companies working of animal healthcare research and products.
-
Private sector:
Job opportunities available for
M.Sc./M.Tech Animal Biotech or M.Sc. Biotech with specialization in
animal biotech or M.Sc. zoology with specialization in relevant
applied branch along with industrial hands on training in animal
biotech companies/ institutes.
There are
several private sector companies engaged in healthcare aspects of
animal and human being. Kindly visit our animal biotech company’s
and research center’s WebPages; and simultaneously also see our
pharmaceutical biotechnology WebPages.
Candidates with M.Sc. in animal
genetics and breeding can also work as animal breeder on livestock
and poultry farms of NGO and private companies engaged in animal
research. There is lack of skilled animal breeder in the area of
livestock genetic improvement.
-
Self employment:
one can start his/her own enterprise after the PG study. NABARD or
other nationalized banks provide financial assistance for this (for
detail visit
Biotech financial assistance).
Pet animal breeding can be a lucrative business for animal breeders.
In the rural areas and villages they can establish livestock
breeding center.
