Career Opportunities
Industrial biotechnology is a very broad term with include application
of biology at industrial level. So it can
include major share of biotechnology since
biotech in itself means application of
biology at industrial level for social
benefits. So industrial biotech consists of
anything from application of Genetic
Engineering, Plant, Animal, Food and Dairy
Technology, Marine and Pharma biotech to
even nanotechnology whichever branch being
utilized at industrial scale. Food sciences
and technology is related to several aspects
of food starting from harvesting crops
(seed/fruits/edible portions) or animal
edible items, such as milk, or
slaughtering to its cooking and consumption. It is
in some means related to agricultural sciences.
A food scientists carry out several
scientific work, just like, studying the
causes and prevention of food borne
illness; studying the causes and
prevention of food quality degradation;
studying and designing the industrial
processes used to manufacture food; inventing
new food products; studying how food is
perceived by the consumer’s senses; studying the molecular
composition of food; designing various
ways of food packaging so as to preserve the food after
it has been processed; studying the application
of science to culinary practice and more
generally gastronomical phenomena; and
of course studying the instrumentation
aspects also. Therefore Food Sciences and Technology in facts include many different branches
of sciences, like instrumentation, chemical engineering, microbiology,
biochemistry etc.
If not wrong food is the first requirement
of any living organism of course here human
beings. Therefore
the importance of food science and
technology can't be ignored. the fast life
style of the growing urban population has
given rise to fast food culture in
our country. This has increased the demand
for packed and processed food
vis-à-vis making the consumer
more quality and nutrition conscious.
Food Processing Industry is a very fast
growing industry with good job prospects in
India and abroad. Latest data indicates that
the food
industry is the fifth largest industry in
India. Right now it generates
employment for around 20 lakhs people and
is likely to generate 2.5 lakhs new jobs every year.
In many advanced
nations, it is the largest industry.
Food production,
procurement, processing, distribution
networks and retailing can be very lucrative
ventures for you. As we know several big
multinational companies has already entered
in this sector. Therefore the industry is
offering tremendous job opportunities to
qualified food technologists. The opportunities
exist mainly in processing industries, hotels, food
industries, quality control, packaging
industries, hospitals, bakery
industries, distilleries, soft drink factories, product
design, pharmaceutical industry, biochemical
engineering, spice, rice and cereal mills.
In Food Sciences and Technology various
departments providing jobs in India are, factory
production(60 percent), R&D (15 percent),
Government labs (3 percent), Teaching (2
percent), Remaining sector (20
percent).
Salary:
A graduate with B.Sc., B.Tech. and B.E. in
Food Sciences and Technology can earn from
Rs.8000.00 to Rs.12,000.00 per month. A PG
degree holder in the same can earn from
Rs.12,000.00 to Rs.18,000.00 per month depending upon
his/her professional skills. with increasing
entry of multinational companies in this
field job prospects and salary packages are
very good. One can opt for business by
taking loans from nationalized banks at
subsidized rates.
Educational Institutes
Eligibilities: Students with PCM or PCB or Agriculture
at 10+2 level can apply for under graduate
courses in food science and technology. For
admission in PG course in Food Sciences or Food
technology, eligibility criterion can be
B.Sc. degree in Food Sciences or Food Technology
or sometime even B.Sc. with CBZ, it depends
upon University's policy as now there are
lots of private universities offering such
courses and they have flexible eligibility
criteria.
