Career Opportunities
According to statistics and expert opinion
this century will belong to biotechnology
industry which will one day outplay IT
industry. Indian biotechnology industry
touched 2 billion dollar mark in revenue for
2006-07 from the 1 billion dollars in
2004-05, thus registering a growth of 37
percent. Indian biotech industry is cruising
away and will reach the target revenue of
five billion dollars by 2010. It will
generate minimum 100,000 jobs. Government
and business organizations have been placing
emphasis on transfer of technologies from
lab to market in biotechnology sector.
Management professionals with technology
background can accelerate this process for
the benefit of business and commerce at the
national and global levels.
Some interesting facts about Indian biotech
industry are- The bio-pharma sector revenue
touched $1.4 billion dollar mark while the
bio-services sector reached $250 million and
bio-agri sector crossed the $250 million
mark revenues in the fiscal year 2006-07.
Indian bio-agri industry achieved the
highest growth rate of 50%. Indian
biotechnology sector attracted good amount
of money and the investments crossed $580
million in 2006-2007. Clinical research is
more than $1 billion industry by
now. India ranked third (following Japan
and Korea) in the Asia Pacific region in
Biotechnology as per survey conducted by
Ernst &Young. The pharma industry has grown
tremendously in the last five years and it
is $8 billion business in India. Though it
is just 2% of the global market and 1% of
the total global production, there is a good
growth for the business due to the
unbeatable medical prices and affordable and
quality manpower. How India's R&D sector is
doing can be understood by its patent filing
speed. India is ranked third in Asia in
patent filings. India is the second largest
manufacturer of vaccines used by children
and these are exported to more than 100
countries.
Besides above data
remarkable increase in the number of
start-up companies in this area has been
seen in the last six years. As far as share
of biotech business region wise is
concerned, 40 percent of the business
generated is by companies headquartered in
the West, South accounts for 38 percent of
the business, and the rest is by companies
located in the North. There are more than 20
biotech parks currently operational in India
with more in pipeline. It will further
strengthen its R&D activities and
product quality. Good revenue and profits
from the industry and assistance from the
government has facilitated in opening these
parks.
Just like other industry biotech industry
also needs service of MBA students to run
its management and business smoothly. But
slight problem may arise when MBAians don’t
understand the scientific intricacy or
nature of the biotech products.
It’s difficult for the regular medical
representatives to convince the doctors to
use the new therapeutic drugs.
Here comes the opportunities for the life
science graduates, who after persuing MBA
can enter in the world of biotechnology
business via enhancing their business and
management skills by getting specialized in
the fields like- marketing, human resources,
entrepreneurship, business strategies and
accountancy & finance. Some topical areas of
modern biotechnology are also covered in the
degree programme like- molecular biology,
bioinformatics and industrial biotechnology.
Similarly life sciences students don’t
understand the business and management
parameters properly. Thus
management programs transform science and
technology students to become management
savvy professionals to run biotech business.
These programs improve their decision making
and managerial skills.
Salary:
Starting
salary Rs.20,000 or even more, depends upon
the type of branch opted and candidate's
capabilities. B.E/B.Tech Students entering
in marketing job in biotech companies also get packages
around Rs. 20,000.00 per month depending upon their
industrial trainings and personal skills.
