Biopharmaceuticals (that is drugs
derived/produced from biological sources)
make around 40% of the total drug market in
India. It has therefore become integral part
of pharmaceutical market now. Drugs can be
classified into generic and non-generic
ones. Generic drugs are those for which now
there doesn’t exist any patent and vice
versa. Most of the patents for non-generic
drugs will get expired around 2010. So big
pharma companies are spending more and more
money in research to develop new drugs to
generate revenue in same ongoing pace. But
there is a serious lacuna of talented
students with R&D aptitude in life science
industries. This is what the industry
owners, HR are saying. Few students are
going for PhD degree and career in research.
So there is lots of scope for students and
biotech persons with strong R&D quality in
this field.
Most of the
company's capital
(more than 90%) is spent in conducting Phase
II to Phase IV trials of drug development
(see our
clinical
research working areas)
therefore for Indian start up company best
way to make money is to develop the drug to
certain stage and then for its further
trials collaborate with other company or
even license it out to big company. For
instance, IMTECH (The Institute of Microbial
Technology) developed a specific clot
buster Streptokinase and then licensed it
to Nostrum Pharmaceutical, New Jersey, USA
for 3% royalty. The market for streptokinase
is around $1 billion in sales and the
royalty alone from this licensing will be
more than the annual budget of IMTECH.
Persons
with post graduate degree in any
healthcare/Pharma branch or specialized in
applied botany and zoology
are offered jobs in healthcare/pharma
industries, hospitals, education and
associated areas. There are many areas of
everyday life as diverse as medical
products, diagnostics and cosmetics.
Industry:
Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies
need and offer jobs for medical/healthcare
biochemists, microbiologists to develop new
products (see
Working Areas) and to monitor the
production, quality control (QC) and safety
of existing products.
Hospitals/Medicine:
Hospitals, public health laboratories and
medical research institutes, as well as the
pharmaceutical industry, all require
biochemists, microbiologist. There you carry
out diagnostic work like blood, urine and
other body fluids tests, alongside
researching the underlying causes of disease
and the methods of treatment.
Higher Education:
There exists opportunities to go for
advanced teaching, usually associated with
research, in academic universities and
colleges, and medical, dental and veterinary
colleges.
