Research:A
unit of CSIR. Its R&D units
consist of Biotech, pharmacology
and natural product chemistry.
Its biotech section has facility
of pilot plant, with
Micro-processor controlled
fomenters (1- 4,000 liter
capacity), and state-of–art
equipment required for
Microbiology, Bio-Chemistry,
Enzymology, Genetic Engineering
and Bio-Chemical Engineering.
isolation of microbes, their
identification (by both
conventional as well as
molecular markers),
characterization, -preservation
and screening for specific
microbial enzymes and secondary
metabolites are carried out. The
microbial strains encoding such
enzymes are identified up to
species level by 16S rRNA gene
typing. The specific enzymes are
purifiedto homogeneity using
FPLC. Terminal sequencing is
undertaken for designing the
primers for the location &
cloning of desired gene(s).
Selected wild type and
recombinant strains are grown at
lab to pilot scale
fermentors.The strategies of
scale-up or scale-down are
selected depending upon the
nature of the process under
study. The pilot plant is well
equipped for down stream
processing of the microbial
biomass for the isolation of
desired biomolecules/products.
The Molecular biology and
Genetic Engineering laboratories
are well equipped to undertake
gene cloning, heterologous
expression, sequencing, RACE and
RTPCR of selected genes. The lab
has ABI 310 automated DNA
sequence and Shimadzu automated
N-terminal protein sequencer for
amino acid sequencing. The lab
is also well equipped to
undertake plant molecule-based
biopotentiator molecules for
enhancing the effect of
anti-bacterial and anti-fungal
drugs. Its Natural Product
chemistry division has Research
and Development in the area of
(i) herbal drugs, drug
formulation and end-to-end
technology on medicinal plants
(ii) isolation of bioactivity
guided extracts, fractions and
new molecules (iii)
standardization, quality control
and isolation of marker
compounds (iv) process
development and upscaling of
technologies for value added
phytochemicals and
phytopharmaceuticals and
chemistry of essential oil
bearing plants and their value
added products. In the
Pharmacology division the plant
based products
(extracts/fractions/pure
principles) are subjected to
battery of well established in
vitro as well as in vivo tests
for their Biopotential, efficacy
and biosafety. The spectrum of
bioactivities is mainly focussed
in areas like, Bioenhancer and
bioavailability,
Hepatoprotective, Anticancer,
Antidiabetic, Antiinflammatory &
antiarthritis, Immunomodulatory,
General pharmacological,
Transgenic animals for
pharmacogenomics, Maintenance
and breeding of lab. Animals.
